Fun games to play in a hot tub

As great as it can be to sit back and relax in your hot tub on a summer day with family and friends, if you’re having a little bit of a hot tub party, then a couple of hot tub games are definitely in order.

Hot tub games are a fantastic way of making fun times with friends and family even more memorable. Not only that, but they’re a great icebreaker, making them perfect for getting the party started when people haven’t met before.

So, if you’re planning on having people round to enjoy your tub in the near future, then get ready to throw your hot tub open to laughter and silliness as we run down 6 of the best hot tub games to try while you dial up the heat on the fun factor.

Our top games to play in a hot tub

Ready to get started planning the games for your next hot tub party? Take a look at the breakdown of our favourites below:

1. Shark Attack

For our first hot tub game, it’s time to raid the kids’ selection of bath toys and grab anything that floats – rubber ducks, plastic balls, bubble bath lids; you name it, if it floats, it’s a shark!

Once you have your sharks in hand, draw an imaginary line down the middle of your hot tub and divide your partygoers into two equal teams, allocating one ‘shark’ to each side of the tub.

From here, the object of the game is to kill off your opponents with ‘shark attacks’ by using any means necessary to get your shark to make contact with their bodies - without ever touching your own shark yourself!

Fan your shark along with your hands, use the jet streams, blow it in different directions, move around to create waves, use any method of propulsion you can think of, but just don’t touch your shark!

Even the merest body contact counts as a bite. And after each bite, both sharks are placed back in the middle of the hot tub to start all over again. The losers are the first team to get bitten five times or the team that gets bitten the most in a five-minute period.

This game is certainly one of the most entertaining yet simple hot tub games to play if you have a spare few minutes and is certain to make a huge splash with kids and grown-ups alike.

2. Brainiacs

Unlike Shark Attack, no props or physical exertion is needed for this particular slice of hot tub fun. Instead, you’ll be exercising your mind instead.

Chances are you’ve probably played this kind of word association game before, perhaps with animals as the theme, or maybe celebrity names. On this occasion, however, the theme is - of course - hot tub parties!

Each person takes turns to say a word that relates to hot tub parties, the only stipulation being it must start with the final letter of the previous person’s word. For example, one person says ‘water’ and the next person says ‘relaxing’.

There are loads of words to go at when you get into the swing of things, although it can be quite tricky to think of them quickly, but you have to be fast, as anyone being too slow gets squirted with cold water as a penalty!

3. Don’t Rock the Boat

For our next hot tub game, you’ll need to turn your jets off and place a medium-sized container, such as a plastic cup or box, in the middle of your hot tub once the water has stilled.

Each player then takes turns to pour water into the ‘boat’ for a count of four, which everyone chants out loud together. This continues until someone tips the balance of the bowl and causes ‘the boat’ to topple or sink, forfeiting their place in the game. Play then goes on until there’s only one person left – the winner!

4. Pass It On

When it comes to the best games to play in a hot tub, Pass It On is certainly up there with the greats, mainly because it’s ludicrously simple and makes for all sorts of hilarity when play gets underway.

To play, simply grab an object, such as a bath toy or plastic water bottle, and then pass it on to the next person – simple, right? Well, not when you know there are a couple of catches to make things a whole lot more interesting.

First, the rules dictate no one can use their hands to pass the item. And secondly, no one can transfer objects between the same body parts. So, you can use your neck to take the object from someone’s elbow, but you can’t do a neck-to-neck or elbow-to-elbow transfer, because that would be an illegal manoeuvre.

Think of this particular game as the hot tub equivalent of Twister. You’ll see what we mean as you watch everyone contort themselves into the oddest of shapes and positions possible to keep the game going.

5. Last One Sitting

In the grand scheme of things, the best snippets of hot tub fun are the games that take minimum effort but have maximum impact, which is why our next game is incredibly straightforward.

All you need are some balloons filled with cold water and some brave revellers who aren’t afraid to get a shock to their system. Then, competitors merely embark on a simple game of catch, with the con that anyone who bursts a balloon not only gets drenched in freezing cold water but also has to leave the hot tub – the winner is the last person sitting!

6. Slam Dunk Basketball

Last, but not least, we have a quick hot tub game classic – Slam Dunk Basketball. All you need to play is plenty of ping pong balls, a plastic box, and your jets on minimal or off so they can’t interfere.

You can then either play in teams or as individuals, taking turns to throw as many ping pong balls as you can into the box on the other side of the water. The winner is whoever hits the target the most within 30 seconds.

Adding the finishing touches to your hot tub fun

Now you’ve got your hot tub games sorted, it’s time to focus on the finishing touches and add that extra spot of je ne sais quoi to your outdoor space with some sophisticated hot tub décor.

Classy lighting can set the scene wonderfully, creating a special ambience and wow factor, while non-negotiable aspects such as drinks, nibbles, and a killer playlist of fabulous party tunes are an absolute must to accompany the celebrations.

But remember, hosting the best hot tub party isn’t necessarily about having everything planned to perfection or looking striking, it’s just about making sure your guests enjoy themselves.
